Austin is finishing the hottest September on record with another week near 100 degrees, and the electronics in your closets, garage and windowsills are paying for it. KXAN's weather team reported that through Friday, September 18, the average temperature at Camp Mabry was 89.4 degrees, the hottest start to any September in the city's records, and that the month has already logged more 100-degree days than any September before it (the old mark was 14, set in 2011). This weekend ran 100 on Saturday and 101 on Sunday with a heat index near 104, overnight lows are stuck in the mid 70s, and the forecast keeps highs in the upper 90s through Friday. Astronomical fall arrives Tuesday, September 22. Nobody's thermostat will notice.
The last three weeks of Austin service calls have had a theme: Wi-Fi that drops every afternoon around 4, a laptop that sounds like a leaf blower, a backup drive that stopped showing up. None of those are coincidences. Here is the checklist we run in this weather, in the order that matters.
Most routers, streaming boxes and laptops are rated for an ambient temperature up to about 95 to 104 degrees. That sounds generous until you measure where the device actually lives. A closed media closet with a router, a modem and a game console stacked together runs 15 to 25 degrees hotter than the hallway outside it. A garage in Austin this month has been sitting at 105 to 115 all afternoon. An attic, where builders love to hang Wi-Fi access points, has been well past 130.
Heat does three things to electronics. It makes chips throttle, so the device gets slow or drops connections to protect itself. It ages lithium batteries fast and permanently with every hour spent above roughly 95 degrees. And it shortens the life of anything with a motor or a sealed battery, which means spinning hard drives and the lead-acid batteries inside most battery backups. A record September means every one of those clocks has been running fast for weeks.
Walk the house late in the afternoon, when the day's heat has soaked in, and put your hand on each device. Warm is normal. Too hot to keep your palm on for five seconds is a problem. Check the router and modem, anything in the garage, and anything on a sunny windowsill. Skip the 130-degree attic; the symptoms below will tell you.
The most common heat call we get is Wi-Fi that works fine in the morning and falls apart between 3 and 7 p.m. That pattern almost always points at an overheating router or modem rebooting itself, or a cable box or console stacked on top of it cooking both.
If the drops continue with the router in open air, the problem may be the modem or the line into the house, and that is a different fix. Our home network and Wi-Fi service starts with measuring, not guessing.
A laptop fan running flat out in a 78-degree room means the machine cannot shed heat. In this weather that usually comes down to dust in the fan and heatsink, a soft surface blocking the intake (a bed, a couch, a lap), or a machine parked in a home office that gets the west sun.
Our device troubleshooting and repair visits this month have been heavy on fan cleanings and thermal paste. It is a cheap fix that adds years.
Every lithium battery in the house is aging faster right now: phones, laptops, earbuds, cordless tools, the e-bike in the garage. Heat is the one thing that does permanent damage to them, and it stacks with charging.
Spinning hard drives are rated to about 130 degrees internally, and a drive in a hot garage is near that before it does any work. We have seen more failed external drives this month than any month this year, and the pattern is the same: the drive lived somewhere hot, and one day the computer stopped seeing it.
If a drive has already stopped showing up, do not keep power cycling it. That is where data backup and recovery either succeeds or does not, and repeated attempts are what tip it the wrong way.
Peak-demand afternoons are when the neighborhood grid flickers, and a flicker is exactly what a battery backup, a UPS, is supposed to ride through. The sealed batteries inside most consumer units are rated for about three years at 77 degrees, and their life drops by roughly half for every 15 degrees above that. A UPS under a desk in a hot home office can be dead inside two summers.
Outdoor cameras on a west-facing wall have been shutting down in the late afternoon all month. Most have a thermal cutoff, so a camera that goes offline at 4 p.m. and returns at 9 p.m. is protecting itself, not broken. A small shade hood or a move one foot out of direct sun usually ends it. If the smart thermostat or hub shows offline every afternoon too, go back to Step 2, because the router is the real patient.
Move the router into open air and unstack it, get the laptop off the bed and clean its fan, keep batteries and backup drives out of the garage and the sun, test the battery backup, and confirm the backup actually ran. That is a Saturday morning of work, and it beats replacing a router in October and a hard drive in November.
